Abstract

1,066,039. Storing liquefied gases. CHANTIERS DE L'ATLANTIQUE (PENHOETLOIRE). Dec. 4, 1963 [June 12, 1963], No. 47957/63. Heading F4P. A tank for transporting and storing liquefied gas comprises a sheet-metal envelope (1) of parallelepipedic configuration, the walls (3), (4) being backed by a rigid enclosure, e.g. a ship's hold through the intermediary of heat insulating distance pieces, e.g. (27), (28), (29), wherein each two flat walls defining one edge of said tank are interconnected by a part cylindrical edge-forming wall section (49) formed up tangentially to said walls, and wherein each three flat walls defining one corner of said tank, Fig. 8 (not shown), are interconnected by a flexible corner forming wall section consisting of three part-toroid portions (50a), (50b), (50c) each of which is joined up tangentially to one of said three flat walls and to the adjoining edge-forming wall sections, and of a triangular portion of a sphere (55), (56a), (56b), (56c) which is joined up tangentially to said three part-toroid portions. The distance pieces, e.g. (14), (17), (15), Fig. 2 (not shown) are made of wood, pieces (14) having a low coefficient of friction. The tank is provided with slideways (20), (46) to allow for movement due to thermal expansion and contraction. Distance pieces (27), (28), (29) supporting the side wall (3) of the tank are wedge shaped to permit adjustment of the backing surface. The distance pieces may be removed to permit access to the tank for maintenance operations. The free space left between the tank and the hold is filled with pulverulent insulating material (13).
