Abstract
Powder-form compositions for cleaning carpets consist of a solid phase comprising an inert finely-divided carrier having a bulk density in the non-compacted state of 7.5-20 pounds per cubic foot, and a liquid phase mixed with the said solid phase and comprising 25-50 weight per cent of the composition; the said liquid phase containing (1) an organic solvent capable of completely evaporating at room temperature in 15-60 minutes when the composition is applied to a carpet, (2) water, and (3) a water-soluble surfactant capable of detergent action and characterized by the ability to dry to a fluffy residue. The inert carrier may be diatomaceous earth, fuller's earth, ground corncob, ground cork, talc, or sawdust, preferably in the particle size range 2-40 microns. Suitable solvent are petroleum distillates, 1,1,1-trichloroethane, perchloroethylene, and ethylene glycol mono-butyl ether. Suitable surfactants are the Na, K, Li, NH4, isopropanolamine, and mono- and tri-ethanolamine salts of alkyl sulphates, alkylaryl sulphonates and alkylol sarcosinates, acetylenic glycols, and higher fatty acid alkanolamides, examples being given. The compositions may also contain a dimethyl silicone emulsion as a lubricant to reduce internal cohesion between the carrier particles, and conventional additives such as preservatives. The compositions are applied manually to a carpet while it is on the floor, worked in by an applicator, the solvent and water allowed to evaporate, and the remaining fluffy residue finally removed by sweeping or vacuuming.
