Abstract
Alumina monohydrate of boehmite structure, having a surface area from 150-600 m2/g. as measured by the B.E.T. nitrogen-adsorption method, is prepared by developing at 60-120 DEG C. for 15 hours to 10 days a suspension or cake of hydrated amorphous alumina gel containing up to 35% by weight of Al2O3 and a quantity of univalent acid ions, e.g. from HNO3, in proportion of 0.05: 1 to 0.5: 1 relative to the molecules of Al2O3. The cake of alumina gel may be obtained by centrifugal drying, washing and filtering an alumina gel precipitated continuously from sodium aluminate and nitric acid at pH 8-9; a suspension is obtained by diluting the cake. The boehmite may be coagulated by washing with aqueous ammonia and drying; this dry product may then be dispersed in isopropanol or aqueous isopropanol and the dispersion medium distilled off to obtain a powder. Boehmite may be used as a pigment, binding agent, filler and film-forming agent.
