Abstract

1,065,636. Drilling pipes. F. W. TALBOT & CO. Ltd. Oct. 15, 1965 [Oct. 16, 1964], No. 42435/64. Heading B3C. [Also in Division F2] Apparatus for fitting a standard ferrule (5), (6) (Figure not shown) to a pipe (12) under pressure comprises a boring tool (1) arranged in the main passage of the ferrule and having a cutter (3) and being screw thread engaged with a first adapter bush (4) for drilling a hole in the pipe (12), and a valve member (8) and actuator (2) screw thread engaged with a second adapter bush (7) in the outlet passage of the ferrule. After drilling the pipe (12) the boring tool is retracted to allow the valve member (8) made of readily deformable material such as rubber, to be pushed into the main passage to seal it off. The boring tool (1) and adapter bush (4) are then removed, a plug valve (14) is inserted in the main passage, the valve member (8), actuator (2) and adapter bush (7) are removed and the plug member (14) is then screwed fully home to its seating (15). The ferrule is first attached to a strap (13) which is secured and sealed to the pipe (12).
