Abstract
Detergents for lubricating oils are imidazoline and imidazoline derivatives of the general formula P-Q (and related compounds of unknown structure) where P is the radical <FORM:1065595/C4-C5/1> where R is a polyalkenyl radical of M.W. 500 to 2500, R1 and R2 are H or lower alkyl groups, y is 0, 1, 2 or 3, and Q is one of the following radicals <FORM:1065595/C4-C5/2> <FORM:1065595/C4-C5/3> <FORM:1065595/C4-C5/4> <FORM:1065595/C4-C5/5> or <FORM:1065595/C4-C5/6> where R3, R4 and R8 are H or lower alkyl groups, R5 and R6 are H or organic groups, R7 is H or an alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkenyl, aryl or heterocyclic radical, P is as above, Z is a direct linkage or an alkylene or alkenylene group of 1 to 16 C atoms, Z1 is an alkylene or alkenylene radical, and X is O, S or =NH. Such compounds may be reaction products of a polyalkenylsuccinic anhydride, a polyalkylene amine and a carbonyl-containing compound. Other metallic and non-metallic detergents (e.g. zinc dialkyl phosphorodithioates including the dihexyl and isobutyl: n-amyl compounds, and alkaline earth metal salts of sulphonic and olefin P2S5 reaction products), viscosity index improvers, pour point depressants, antifoam agents, and oxidation and corrosion inhibitors may be added. The base oil may have a naphthenic or paraffinic base or may be derived from coal products or may be a synthetic oil such as an alkylene, alkylene oxide, or silicon polymer, a dicarboxylic acid or silicate ester, or an alkylated benzene. The compounds may be used in fuel oil or gasoline.ALSO:Imidazoline and imidazolidine derivatives of the general formula P-Q and related compounds of unknown structure where P is the radical <FORM:1065595/C3/1> where R is a polyalkenyl radical of molecular weight 500 to 2500, R1 and R2 are hydrogen atoms or lower alkyl groups, y is 0, 1, 2 or 3 and Q is one of the following radicals (A) <FORM:1065595/C3/2> (B) <FORM:1065595/C3/3> (C) <FORM:1065595/C3/4> (D) <FORM:1065595/C3/5> OR (E) <FORM:1065595/C3/6> where R3, R4 and R8 are hydrogen or lower alkyl groups, R5 and R6 are hydrogen or organic groups, R7 is hydrogen or an alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkenyl, aryl or heterocyclic radical, P is as above, Z is a direct linkage or an alkylene or alkenylene group of 1 to 16 carbon atoms, Z1 is an alkylene or alkenylene radical and X is oxygen, sulphur or an >NH group, may be prepared by reacting a polyalkenyl succinic anhydride <FORM:1065595/C3/7> or the corresponding acid with a polyalkylene amine (III) <FORM:1065595/C3/8> and with a third reactant which determines the nature of the grouping Q. When Q has the formula (a) or (b) the third reactant is an aldehyde or ketone <FORM:1065595/C3/9> or a dialdehyde or diketone <FORM:1065595/C3/100> where "x" is zero to 16. When Q has the formula (c) or (d) the third reactant is a monocarboxylic acid <FORM:1065595/C3/111> or anhydride thereof or a dicarboxylic acid <FORM:1065595/C3/122> or anhydride thereof and when Q has the formula (e) the third reactant is urea, thiourea or guanidine of formula <FORM:1065595/C3/133>
