Abstract

A centrifugal separator has a bowl with an imperforate truncated conical portion joined at its narrower end to a perforate portion which may be truncated conical (with the same or opposite direction of "flare"), or cylindrical. Slurry is fed through holes in the core of a differentially-rotating screw at the region upstream of the perforate portion. Solids are removed from the far end of the perforate portion. Spray nozzles for supplying washing water or steam may be provided opposite the perforate portion. Filtrates and wash liquids may be classified by appropriate baffles prior to discharge. Liquid is removed through apertures so located in the closing end plate of the imperforate portion as to ensure that the pool margin is a substantial distance from the beginning of the perforate portion. This promotes initial drainage of the bulk of the liquid from the slurry leaving only residual liquid to be removed through the perforate portion. Numerical criteria for this "substantial distance", based on certain proportions of the apparatus, are described, and featured in the claims.
