Abstract
Sulphuric acid is produced from SO2-containing gas having a temperature above 120 DEG C. by (i) humidifying and cooling the gas to below 100 DEG C. by direct contact with dilute H2SO4, (ii) reacting the cooled gas with oxygen and water in the presence of an adsorbent impregnated with a catalyst (as described in Specification 994,070), to produce dilute H2SO4, and (iii) drying and heating the SO2-free gas by direct contact with a portion of the hot concentrated H2SO4 obtained in (i), the remainder being removed as product. The dilute H2SO4 produced in (ii) and (iii) is used in (i), preferably at 45-70 DEG C. and 45-65% concentration, and the concentrated H2SO4 used in (iii) should be at at least 110 DEG C. and 70% concentration. The SO2-containing gas may have been obtained by the combustion of fuel oil. The adsorbent may be carbonaceous, meerschaum, or aluminium silicate, and the catalyst may be iodine, Mn, Cu, Au, Ti, Fe, Pt metal, Zn, Ni, Co, Sn, As, Cr, V, or Mo, or oxides or compounds thereof.
