Abstract

1,064,444. Processing radio-active waste; separating radio-active isotopes. H. RIESENHUBER and D. GROSSMANN. March 19, 1964 [March 20, 1963 (2)], No. 11721/64. Heading G6R. Radio-active ions are separated from solution by passing the solution through a filter on which is a sparingly soluble salt of a non- radio-active isotope of the radio-active element to be separated. Rapid ion exchange takes place between the solution and the solid material and radio-active ions accumulate in the solid. A membrane filter may be used and the solution passed through at 1-100 mls/ cm<SP>2</SP>/min. Several filters may be arranged in a column. In an example Ba 140 ions are removed from solution by filtering through inactive BaSO 4 . The process is useful for decontaminating radio-active waste water solution and for selective separation of radio-active ions.
