Abstract
1,064,000. Resistors. SIEMENS A.G. Aug. 6, 1965 [Aug. 7, 1964], No. 33690/65. Heading H1K. A resistor having a positive temperature cofficient of resistance and/or a resistance which is independent of the applied voltage, comprises a body of sintered grains of 0À1 to 2À0 Á, of a ferro-electric ceramic perovskite material of formula M<SP>1</SP>M<SP>11</SP>O 3 containing at least one dopant wherein the proportion of dopant at the grain boundaries is at least ten times greater than in the interior and wherein the dopants amount to 0À01 to 0À3 mol. per cent of the metal M<SP>11</SP>. M<SP>1</SP> may be a divalent metal e.g. an alkaline earth, and M<SP>11</SP> a tetravalent metal e.g. Ti, Zr or Sn; or M<SP>1</SP> a monovalent metal e.g. an alkali metal and M<SP>11</SP> a pentavalent metal e.g. Nb or Ta, whilst the dopants may be Sb, La or Nb. A suitable resistor composition may be made by milling BaCO 3 , TiO 2 and Sb 2 O 3 in distilled water, drying and heating to 1000-1100‹ C. to give barium titanate doped with antimony. The titanate is mixed with an organic binder, pressed into shape and sintered at 1360‹ to 1440‹ C. in an oxidizing atmosphere. The sintered product has metal electrodes applied thereto and is encapsulated to keep it moisture free.
