Abstract
In a process for preparing vinyl acetate by contacting ethylene with a palladium salt in the presence of acetic acid, acetate ions, a redox system and molecular oxygen, which produces a mixture of vinyl acetate and acetaldehyde in a range between 1 : 10 to 10 : 1, the acetaldehyde is removed and at least part oxidized to acetic acid and/or acetic anhydride which is then recycled to the vinyl acetate production step. The acetaldehyde oxidation may be in the liquid phase under pressure by oxygen or air in the presence of a copper, cobalt, nickel or manganese acetate or oleate or a mixture thereof as catalyst and acetic acid, ethyl acetate and ethylidene diacetate which are by-products may also be present. Examples of the process operated continuously are described.
