Abstract

1,063,695. Irradiation apparatus. UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION. Oct. 1, 1963, No. 38524/63. Heading H5R. Apparatus for providing a flow of substantially sterile fluid comprises a source 24 of germicidal radiation, e.g. an ultra-violet source, and a baffle structure 22 disposed around and spaced from the radiation source, the arrangement being such that in the space adjacent the source 24 the fluid flows in a substantially unimpeded non-turbulent fashion, whilst the fluid flows in a turbulent fashion adjacent the baffle. As shown, the baffle is of helical form, and the apparatus may be mounted within an air-conditioning system. The surfaces of the baffle are polished so as to reflect the ultraviolet light. The transit-time of the fluid in the baffle is longer than that close to the source, thus compensating for the drop in intensity of the germicidal radiation.
