Abstract

1,062,874. Hydrostatic transmissions. DOWTY TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. Aug. 25, 1964 [Aug. 29, 1963], No. 34165/63. Headings F2C and F2D. The casings of a plurality of tilting head pump and/or motor units for a hydrostatic transmission are joined together for conjoint tilting movement about a single axis. As shown, Fig. 4, in a hydrostatic transmission a pair of motor units in a single casing 6 are hydraulically connected in parallel and are supplied with pressure liquid by a tilting head pump 1. The casing 6 is pivoted at 38, 43, 44, 41 to a fixed housing 14 and has valve plates 28, 29 which co-operate with rotatable cylinder blocks 47, 71 having axial cylinders 51, 73 co-operating with pistons 57, 79 pivotally connected to plates 65, 86 fast with output shafts 5, 17. The shafts 5, 17 are geared together at 19, 21 so that the two motors rotate at equal speeds in opposite directions. Ducts 58 in the piston connecting rods permit fluid from the working circuit to lubricate bearing plates 68, 87. Ports 55, 56, 77, 78 in valve plates 28, 29 are interconnected by ducts 97, 99 which terminate in a lug 91 which is pivotally connected by links 7, 8 to the pump. The links 7, 8 also transmit hydraulic fluid between the pump and motor units. In Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), the output shafts of the motor units each carry a gear which meshes a gear on a separate driven shaft and thus each motor unit rotates in the same direction. In Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown), the output shafts of the motor units are geared together through an axially slidable idler, axial movement of which disconnects the output shafts. A valve is also provided between the valve plates so that one of the motors may be isolated hydraulically. This arrangement increases the range of output speeds by permitting the motors to be used in parallel for low speed high torque operation and using one motor alone for high speed operation. In Fig. 10, the motor output shafts 5, 17 are geared at 151, 152, 155, 156 to the half-shafts 153, 157 of a motor vehicle and permit differential action. The differential action may be locked out by engaging a clutch 159 which connects the two half shafts. The multiple tilting head unit may include both pump and motor units in which case the cylinder blocks are parallel and the input and output shafts at an angle to each other.
