Abstract
An organosilicon composition having a ratio of organic radicals to Si atoms of 1.01-1.85 is prepared by forming a mixture of the hydrolysis products of a diorganodichlorosilane and a silane of formula RSiClnX3- n, wherein n is 1 or 2, R is a monovalent hydrocarbon radical which may be substituted and X is an alkoxy radical which is less easily hydrolysed than the chlorine atoms under the conditions of the hydrolysis reaction, said hydrolyses being effected at a pH of 5.5-9.0. In a modification the two silanes may be cohydrolysed. After hydrolysis the composition may be polymerized to form a polysiloxane e.g. by heating in the presence of zinc octoate. The radical R may be methyl, vinyl or phenyl and X may be an isopropoxy or isobutoxy radical. In a typical example (1) 3.6 moles of phenylisopropoxydichlorosilane and dimethyldichlorosilane (8.4 moles) were hydrolysed together in the presence of ammonium carbonate, water and diethyl ether.ALSO:Glass cloth tape is coated e.g. by dipping, with a solution of a polysiloxane composition formed by hydrolysing at pH 5.5-9.0 a diorganodichlorosilane and a silane of formula RSi ClnX3-n wherein n is 1 or 2, R is a monovalent substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon radical and X is an alkoxy radical, and then polymerizing the mixture of hydrolysis products. The two silanes may be cohydrolysed, or hydrolysed separately and then mixed.
