Abstract

Anti-fouling paints comprise as poisonous component a homopolymer or copolymer of an organotin compound of the formula <FORM:1062324/C4-C5/1> wherein R1, R2 and R3, which may be the same or different, represent a C2-6 alkyl radical or a phenyl radical, and R4 and R5, which may be the same or different, represent hydrogen or a methyl, ethyl or phenyl radical. Preferably, R4 is hydrogen or methyl and R5 is hydrogen. Various comonomers are listed for the organotin compounds; copolymers specifically exemplified are those in which the comonomers are (a) vinyl acetate and (b) methacrylic acid-n-butyl acrylate. The paint may contain conventional binders, solvents, bodying agents, pigments etc.; components specified are ferric oxide, talc, titanium dioxide, cuprous oxide, carbon black, chrome yellow, phthalocyanine blue, rosin, bodied linseed oil, xylene, methyl isobutyl ketone, vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer and methyl methacrylate-octyl acrylate-styrene copolymer.ALSO:Anti-fouling paints comprise as poisonous component a homopolymer or copolymer of an organotin compound of the formula <FORM:1062324/C3/1> wherein R1, R2 and R3, which may be the same or different, represent a C2- 6 alkyl radical or a phenyl radical, and R4 and R5, which may be the same or different, represent hydrogen or a methyl, ethyl or phenyl radical. Preferably, R4 is hydrogen or methyl and R5 is hydrogen. Suitable comonomers include vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, vinylidene chloride, styrene, a -methylstyrene, vinyl toluene, 2-vinyl furan, acrylic acid and methacrylic acid and their alkyl esters, acrylonitrile, acrylamide, glycidyl methacrylate, maleic acid, fumaric acid, divinyl benzene and mixtures thereof. The paint may contain conventional binders, solvents, bodying agents, pigments etc.; components specified are ferric oxide, talc, titanium dioxide, cuprous oxide, carbon black, chrome yellow, phthalocyanine blue, rosin, bodied linseed oil, xylene, methyl isobutyl ketone, vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer and methyl methacrylate-octyl acrylate-styrene copolymer. The poisons used in the examples are tri-n-butyl tin methacrylate polymer, tri-n-propyl tin acrylate polymer, tri - n - butyl tin methacrylatevinyl acetate copolymer, tri-n-amyl tin acrylate polymer, tri - n - butyl tin methacrylate-methacrylic acid - n - butyl acrylate copolymer, tri - n - amyl tin methacrylate polymer, triphenyl tin methacrylate polymer, di-n-butyl n-amyl tin methacrylate polymer and di-n-butyl phenyl tin acrylate polymer. The organo tin polymers can be prepared by polymerizing the corresponding monomer(s) in a liquid medium such as toluene or xylene and in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. an organic peroxide.
