Abstract

A synthetic lubricant or power-transmitting liquid comprises at least 5% of one or more compounds of the formula A(OSi)2(OR)6- n(OR1)n where A is a polyoxyalkylene residue containing 1-6 etheric oxygen atoms, each R is a polyoxyalkylene glycol ether residue containing 2-8 etheric oxygen atoms, each R1 is a C9- 20 alkyl group and n is 0 or an integer from 1-4, in admixture with up to 95% of another lubricant. Such liquids are stated to retain fluidity at low temperatures.ALSO:Novel compounds of the formula A(OSi)2(OR)6- n(OR1)n wherein A is a polyoxyalkylene residue containing 1-6 etheric oxygen atoms, R is a polyoxyalkylene glycol ether residue containing 2-8 etheric oxygen atoms, R1 is an alkyl group of 9-20 carbon atoms, and n is 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4, may be made by conventional procedures, e.g. by reacting the requisite glycols with SiCl4. Individual R or R1 groups may be the same or different. Preferred esters have n = 0 or 3, and A is (CH2CH2O)2 or 3-CH2CH2-, R is di-or triethylene glycol ethyl or n-butyl ether and R1 is isodecyl or isotridecyl. The compounds are stated to be good low-temperature lubricants and power-transmitting fluids (see Division C5).
