[Also in Division F4] A block of refractory material is sealed within a heat-shrunk wrapper of synthetic film. The block may be placed into its position of use while still wrapped, the heat of the installation burning the wrapper away when it is brought up to temperature. If the block is of a mouldable material, it may be moulded to the requisite shape while still wrapped, the moisture content thus being retained unchanged throughout. A sheet of combustible material may be included within the wrapper, or adhered to the outside thereof, in order to provide a gap between adjacent blocks when they are heated, to allow for thermal expansion of the refractory material. Alternatively a sheet of metal, which fuses with the refractory material on heating, may be used. The wrapper may be applied as two separate sheets, heat-sealed peripherally around the block and then heat-shrunk, or a single sheet may be folded longitudinally and heat-sealed transversely at one end to form a pocket into which the block is placed, the remaining two sides then being heat-sealed prior to shrinking. In a further form a series of blocks is wrapped in material supplied from two webs, which are transversely sealed together on both sides of each block, the end flaps then being sealed prior to shrinking. The wrapper may be applied as an open-ended tube not completely enclosing the block, this form being suitable if the material of the block is not liable to deterioration on contact with the atmosphere.
