Abstract
1,062,282. Etching apparatus. EASTMAN KODAK CO. July 3, 1964 [Aug. 9, 1963], No. 27479/64. Heading B6J. In apparatus for etching the work surface of a printing plate 14 of cellulose acetate or similar substance attached to a drum 10, a plush fabric belt 18 of a material such as mohair is used to apply the etchant to the surface of the workpiece. The surface to be etched is softened and removed by a scrubbing action of the belt 18. The belt 18 is moved to and fro by a reversible motor 22 driving a roller 21 and is further reciprocated along the axis of the two rollers 21 and 20 by a crank mechanism reciprocating the support for the two rollers. As the drum 10 rotates, excess etchant is removed by a wiper blade 48 and/or a brush 42, and hot air jets 54 and radiant heaters 56 dry the plate 14. Fumes are extracted from the drying zone beneath the cover 57. A cold air jet 68 may be used to cool the plate 14 as it leaves the drying zone. The printing plate 14 may have a backing of an iron based metal for strength and may be attached to the surface of the drum 10 magnetically. The drum 10 has a layer 11 of helically wound magnetic strip, Fig. 3, and an insulating layer 12 of material such as cork, covered by a gummed kraft paper tape 13. A thermostat 60 in the surface of the drum 10, Fig. 2, controls the temperature of the drying stage.
