Abstract
1,062,102. Motor vehicles. R. A. SLAY. March 1, 1965 [Aug. 21, 1964], No. 34381/64. Headings B7D and B7H. A motor vehicle comprises at least one castor wheel 16, 17 at each end and one or more driving wheels 50 therebetween steerable about a vertical axis. The driving wheel 50 is suspended by swinging arms 22 and a coil spring 25 from a yoke 21 on a platform 45 journalled by a bearing 46 in the vehicle chassis 10 and rotated by a steering-wheel 60 through worm gearing 78 and spur gearing 55, 56, 57. An electric motor or I.C. engine on the platform 45 drives the wheel 50 through belt drives 52, 53. Each castor wheel 16, 17 is similarly suspended from a vertical spindle journalled in a tubular member on the chassis 10. Motors 61 which drive worms 39 engaging wormwheels 35 rotatable on each spindle orientate the castor wheels 16, 17 when required upon coupling the wormwheels 35 to the spindles by cone clutches controlled through flexible cables 74 from levers 82 on a control panel 79. Dials 81 on the panel 79 are connected by flexible drives 77 to further worms engaging wormwheels on the spindles to indicate the attitude of each castor wheel 16, 17. Brakes 26 on the castor wheels 16, 17 communicate through flexible pipes 27, bores in the spindles, and tubes 29 with a master cylinder 31 actuated by a pedal 32. The driving wheel 50 is steerable through 360 degrees or 180 degrees only if a reversible drive is provided, and may be movable vertically from engagement with the ground to facilitate pivoting of the wheel when the vehicle is stationary. In another embodiment (Figs. 1 and 2, not shown) the castor wheels are orientated manually and locked in position by pins engaging a series of apertures. In a further embodiment (Fig. 17, not shown) guide wheels for engagement with a rail or groove are provided at each end of the vehicle, and two laterally spaced steerable driving wheels may be driven differentially to assist the steering action.
