Abstract

1,061,791. Insulated box pallets; collapsible containers. W. L. MORRISON. Feb. 28, 1964 [Feb. 28, 1963], No. 8455/64. Headings B8H and B8P. An insulated shipping container comprises a rigid pallet 10 with skids 11 and a flexible fabric-like gas-tight bag 12 adhered to the pallet 10 with a rigid load supporting, insulating body 13 therein. An inner gas-tight bag 13 is adhered to the body 13 and a flexible annular diaphragm 20 provides a gas-tight closure for the bags 12, 15. The space within the bags 12, 15 is filled with a soft, expandable, contractable insulating material 14 (which may be intercellular, foamed elastomeric plastic material) with an elastic memory. An expandable, contractable door 22 faced by a rigid panel 23 is mounted in a frame 21 on the diaphragm 20 to provide access to the container. In order to load the container the door 22 is removed and air is exhausted from the material 14 through a valve 26. The bags 12, 15 collapse, horizontal collapse being restricted by flat spacers 16. In the collapsed condition (Fig. 2) packages of frozen food 28 may be loaded and retained by tension straps 27 passing over a rigid tie plate 29. Air is then allowed into the material 14 and its elastic memory restores its original form (Fig. 1), when the door 22 is fitted and held in place by bars 24 passed through loops 25. Expansion from the collapsed portion may be expedited by forcing air into the material 14. Rings 31, 32 looped respectively to bags 12, 15 may replace the spacers 16 (Fig. 6) or rings and flexible spacers may be used (Figs. 7, 8, not shown). The container need not necessarily be mounted on a pallet, any insulated base, e.g. similar to the side walls, might well be used.
