Abstract

1,061,350. Adjustable beds and seats. ALLAN CHRISTENSEN & CO. Oct. 5, 1965 [Oct. 16, 1964], No. 42172/65. Heading A4J. A bed or chair has longitudinal side members 1 on which a seat supporting surface 2 is mounted by means of parallel bars 3, 4 which turn about pivot points 6, 7 on the side bars 1. Bars 3, 4 also pivot about points on a downwardly extending arm 5 fixed to frame 2. Frame 2 is linked to a frame 8 of a back supporting surface and to a frame 10 of a thigh supporting surface. Bars 3 may form the sides of frame 8. The back and thigh supporting surfaces are formed by lamellae 9 which are attached to frames 8, 10 and to displaceable transverse bars 12. Lamellae 9<SP>1</SP> pass through spaces between lamellae 9 and form the seat surface. The effective length of the seat surface is varied by adjusting the positions of the transverse bars 12. Side members 1 are downwardly cranked below seat frame 2 to afford room for lowering the seat supporting surface from a lying to a sitting position. Locking mechanism 11 are provided to lock seat frame 2 in adjusted vertical position and frames 8, 10 in adjusted angular positions. A handle 22 is provided so that mechanisms 11 may be locked and unlocked by a person lying in the bed.
