Abstract

1,061,344. Piston and stuffing box packing. J. L. GRATZMULLER. April 9, 1965 [April 14, 1964], No. 15.179/fist. Headings F2B and F2T. A packing arrangement for sealing the clearance between two movable members, such as a piston and cylinder 31, 32 comprises at least two deformable rings 45, 47 having different degrees of hardness located on a shoulder of one of the members and separated by a ring 48 or layer of plastics material having self-lubricating properties, the rings being axially compressed by a spring 38. The plastics rings 48 may be of polytetrafluoroethylene and adapted to engage with the cylinder wall. In an alternative arrangement, the rings are mounted in a housing (58, Fig. 2) and are arranged to engage a shaft 57.
