Abstract

[Also in Division F1] In a pump, compressor, engine, or the like, cylinders are mounted on a rotary crank-pin and have linear reciprocating motion on fixed pistons, the crank-shaft being so designed and mounted that the crank-pin while rotating has linear reciprocating motion. As shown in Fig. 1, a pump or compressor comprises a cylinder block comprising cylinders 1a mounted on a crank-pin 2a and reciprocating on fixed pistons 3. The crank-pin 2a has a port 9a communicating with an inlet which port communicates during rotation with inlet ports 10 in the cylinders 1a. Discharge from the cylinders takes place through spring-loaded valves 13 to outlets 12. The crankshaft comprises further crankpins 2b mounted in bearings in slides 4 which are slidable at right angles to the plane shown. Further crank-pins 2c are mounted in bearings in balance weights 5 which are coupled to the drive shafts 6 by couplings 6b, 6c. The embodiment shown in Fig. 2 comprises an I.C. engine; in addition to the cylinders 31 reciprocating on the fixed pistons 23d further pistons 28 are provided on the reciprocating cylinders 31 and these pistons 28 reciprocate in cylinders formed in the fixed pistons 23d. The chamber between the reciprocating cylinder 31 and piston 28 communicates with inlet passages in the crankpin and subsequently with passages in the crank-pin leading to a port which communicates with a passage 61 in the opposite piston 28 from where it flows into the cylinder 23a driving exhaust gases through the port 64. The engine may be arranged for compression or spark ignition. In Fig. 13 (not shown) a further crank-pin is provided on the crank-shaft and is rotatable in a cylinder block arranged to reciprocate at right angles to a first cylinder block. In Fig. 14 (not shown) an I.C. engine of the type shown in Fig. 2 is directly coupled to a two-stage compressor of similar construction.
