Abstract

Compositions for topical application to the skin comprise an aqueous solution containing 20% to 50% by weight of a water-soluble polyalkylene glycol ether of formula: R-O-(Alk-O)n-R1 wherein R is C1 to C4 alkyl; R1 is C1 to C4 alkyl or hydrogen; n is 2, 3 or 4; and each Alk may be the same or different and is alkylene containing up to 3 carbons, with at least 2 carbons in the chain between the two adjacent oxygens; and a thickening agent. Such agents may be for example polyacrylic acids, propylene glycol alginic acid esters, or ionogenic cellulose ethers when they are polyacrylic acids, the compositions preferably also contain a suitable base-e.g. di-iso-propanolamine-for neutralisation. The compositions may also contain a preservative and/or a perfume, when they may be of a cosmetic nature. They are useful for distributing the sebaceous secretions of the skin over the whole surface of the skin, for softening and emollient purposes.
