Abstract

1,060,155. Laminates and laminating. ST. REGIS PAPER CO. Dec. 11. 1963 [Jan. 4, 1963 (2)], No. 49002/63. Heading B5N. [Also in Division B8] In a method of making a laminate comprising a layer 12 of corrugated material having a cohesive coating on one side and a backing sheet 13 adhered to the other side, a sheet of material 25 to be corrugated is coated on one side with an aqueous dispersion of the cohesive material, e.g. natural or synthetic rubber, dried so that the coating becomes non-sticky but remains cohesive to like e material, then corrugated and a backing sheet adhered to the uncoated surface. In Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the material (25) is fed from a roll (15) between rollers (17) and (18) where it is coated on one side with latex, then through heated drying means (23) to a collecting roll. The coated material is fed from roll (26) between corrugating rollers (29) and (30) coated with a release agent, and on passing between rollers (29) and (31) the lips of the corrugations on the uncoated side are supplied with an adhesive such as a starch composition, after which a backing sheet (33) is adhered thereto and the laminate collected in a roll (37). The materials used may comprise paper or plastics material and the backing sheet may comprise metal foil or be coated with release material or with polythene, e.g. by extrusion. The laminate may be used in packaging by folding a sheet thereof to enclose the article to be packaged and cohering together the opposed corrugated surfaces.
