Abstract

Block copolymers are made by polymerizing propylene or a mixture thereof with ethylene containing 1.5 to 5 mol per cent of the latter in an inert solvent with a catalyst system consisting of an aluminium dialkyl monohalide, titanium trichloride and a glycol diether, the mol ratio of the aluminium dialkyl monohalide to titanium trichloride being in the range of 0.2:1 to 10:1 and the atomic ratio of aluminium to glycol diether oxygen being from 1:0.06 to 1:0.01, then discontinuing the monomer feed and continuing polymerization with a second feed which is ethylene or a mixture thereof with a lesser quantity of propylene than is present in the first feed, and recovering a product having an ethylene content of 3 to 15 mole per cent. The alternation of feeds may take place more than once. Glycol diethers specified are dimethyl and diethyl ethers of ethylene, diethylene and triethylene glycols.
