Abstract
1,059,858. Surgical apparatus. N. A. MACLEOD. June 19, 1964 [June 21, 1963], No. 25394/64. Heading ASR. An apparatus for improving the blood circulation in a part of the body of a human or animal comprises a chamber into which the body part can be sealed, and means to apply positive and negative pressure pulses to the fluid (e.g. water or air) which surrounds the body part within the chamber. As shown, the apparatus comprises a water-filled chamber 10 to which positive and negative pressure variations are applied from a piston 36, the chamber being sealed about a limb 12 to which is fitted a touniquet 47 which occludes the artery to the limb in accordance with the pressure variations so that the blood is drawn into the limb through the artery under negative pressure and is returned back to the heart through the heart through the veins under positive pressure. The tourniquet may comprise a shaped ball which is inflated (Fig. 2, 3, not shown), a bellows device (Fig. 5, not shown), or a solenoid device (Fig. 6, 8, not shown) and the apparatus may also include a device which occludes a major vein such as to assist the natural unidirectional blood flow. An alternative apparatus (Fig. 7, not shown) is shaped to fit closely about the limb and is air-filled, the chamber containing the artery-occluding devices (71, 72). The pressure variation may be irregular or synchronised to the beats of the heart.
