A transport system comprises a continuous chain of cars W1. W2, W3, W4, Figs. 3, 8, or a chain of groups of cars, continuously driven at a constant speed along a closedcircuit track 30 extending through at least two stations, each group of cars detachably carrying at least one container 20 and at each station the container is uncoupled from the group at A, Fig. 8, is decelerated between B and C for unloading and loading at C to E, is accelerated between E and F and is recoupled to the car group at G. Each car is divided into two with seats 5 in one half and a corridor 4 in the other, adjacent cars being connected by bellows 18. Each car has a longitudinal frame 8 connected at its ends by universal joints to pins 15 on the frame of a bogie 10a &c. Figs. 3, 5, each container having a tooth member 22 to fit into a recess 17 in a platform 16 on the bogie, Fig. 5, 7. The container is coupled to the corridor part 25 of platform 16 by a pin-and-socket device 26; and part 25 and container 20 have doors 25a, 23, 24. Suspension means 27, 28 convey the container into the branch track at a station. In operation, persons wishing to alight at a station enter container 20 which is detached at A, Fig. 8, and decelerated by worm means or electric motors; doors 24 automatically open for persons to alight on to moving floor 31; doors 24 then close and doors 23 open for persons to enter the container from moving floor 32; the doors 23 close and the container accelerates to the speed of the car groups and is recoupted at G. In Figs. 9, 10 not shown, the containers are divided into two, are brought to rest at a station for loading and unloading and are rotated through 90 or 180 degrees from their position on the car groups to the rest position. Each group of cars may have means to maintain its speed constant and to maintain correct spacing between groups and car groups can be switched into or out of the continuous transport system. The groups may however be driven by motorized bogies or be connected together by a traction cable.
