Abstract

1,058,586. Moulding hollow articles. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 5, 1964, No. 40645/63. Heading B5A. A box, crate, drum or like open-mouthed hollow article is moulded from an organic thermoplastic material by rotational casting in a mould, one surface of which has projections 4 into the mould cavity, the material being introduced into the cavity in such amounts that the walls of the moulding 6 become fused at 7 opposite the projections but are elsewhere separated by cavities. As shown, the mould is in the form of a pair of mould plates 1, 2 secured by clips 3. The articles may be formed in two or more parts which are subsequently joined together, for example by welding. For producing tubular bodies the mould is rotated about its longitudinal axis only, and for other articles the mould is rotated about two or more axes, for example two at right angles. The mould may be treated in an oven, by radiant heat or by electrical heaters in or around the mould walls, and cooled by water or cold air. A solid thermoplastic, e.g. polythene, polyproplene, unplasticized polyvinyl chloride and vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate polymer, may be introduced into the mould, heating the mould before and/or during its rotation. Alternatively a fluid polymer/plasticizer paste, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, is introduced into the mould, rotating the mould at a temperature below the paste setting temperature, and then heating the mould to gel the paste. The solid thermoplastic material is preferably powdered, granular or in other particulate form with a bulk density such as to fill the mould substantially completely. Preferably the bulk density of the material will be not exceeding 0.75 times the specific gravity of the thermoplastic material. In a preferred embodiment polythene with a melt flow index of 20 and specific gravity of 0.924 is cut into granules passing an 8-inch sieve and with a bulk density of 0.40 grams per c.c. fills a mould having a space between the plates of 0.25 and 0.5 inch. The mould is closed and then rotated about its longitudinal and transverse axes and while rotated it is heated for 10 minutes in an oven at 205‹ C. and then cooled in water. The finished panel had walls of 0.15 inch wide between ribs which were 0À6 inch wide at the wall joints.
