Abstract

Dense acidic refractory compositions comprise 20-77.5% fire clay, 20-77.5% silica sand, 0-15% carbon and 2.5-15% of a material capable of reducing FeO at 1800-3000 DEG F. to form a non-alkaline refractory oxide. Reducing agents specified are silicon, aluminium, chromium, manganese mixtures, alloys, ferroalloys and metallo-carbon forms thereof, e.g. silicon carbide. The carbon may be in the form of graphite, coke, sea coal or pitch.
