[Also in Division B8] Cutting wheels 4 and 5 cut a filter rod into three rod portions F side by side and the rod portions are reorientated whilst being carried by a rotating wheel 3 so that they assume a position in line ahead. First embodiment, Fig. 2. The wheel 3 carries pairs of forks 24 and 25, and the forks 24, 25 are carried by levers 28 pivoted at 29 and controlled at 30 by cam 31 so as to displace a rod portion F along the periphery of wheel 3. Stationary guides 35 then displace each rod portion into an appropriate groove 20. Thus a filter rod is first fed on to wheel 3 so as to be positioned along a groove 20 and between the prongs of forks 24 and 25. A rod falls into every third groove 20. The rod in this position is then cut into three portions F by the cutters 4 and 5 as it is carried by the wheel 3. Each end rod portion is then displaced by its fork in the direction of movement of the wheel, fork 25 moving backwards whilst fork 24 moves forward till each rod portion arrives at a position opposite to an empty groove 20. At this moment guides 35 then press the rod portion into the groove 20 which awaits it so that the rod portions now fill all the grooves 20 of wheel 3. The rod portions are now in the line ahead position. Second embodiment, Fig. 4. Each filter rod S is transferred from a drum 2 and falls into a commencing position on rotating wheel 3. This position lies in a groove 20 and across receiving elements 36 and 41 lying adjacent the front portions 37 of said elements. A rod fills every third groove 20. Each rod S is now cut into three portions by cutters 4 and 5, rods being held in apertures 48 of independently driven discs 45 and 46 whilst the cutting takes place. The three rod portions now lie respectively on receiving element 36, groove 20 and receiving element 41. The rods which lie on the receiving elements are now displaced relatively to the rod which lies in a groove 20, the rod positioned at 37 being displaced backwards to position 38 whilst the rod lying on element 41 is displaced backwards a larger distance to position 39, the displacement respectively being effected by rollers 55 and 57. Each displaced rod portion is now opposite an empty groove 20 and is displaced thereinto by the stationary guides 35 as the wheel 3 rotates. The rod portions have now taken up the required in line position. Alternatively the displacement in the line of movement of wheel 3 may be effected by stationary faces, the rods on the receiving elements being positioned thereon by a moving part of said element and the parts being moved perpendicular to the faces of the receiving element in order to permit the displacement of the rod portion in the direction of movement of the wheel 3.
