Abstract

1,057,861. Laminates. COOPERS MECHANICAL JOINTS Ltd. June 12, 1964 [June 13, 1963], No. 23688/63. Heading B5N. [Also in Division F2] In a cylinder head or other gasket having at least one aperture 11 therein and comprising a central layer 10 of metal having on each side thereof a layer 17, 18 of a heat resistant material containing or consisting of asbestos, the metal layer includes a metal corrugation 15 surrounding the aperture 11. In the cylinder head gasket shown in Fig. 1 a metal ring 14 having a corrugation 15 is secured to the layer 10 around each cylinder bore aperture 11 and a U-section eyelet in two layers 16a, 16b, preferably of steel, extends over the ring 14 and the layer 10, the free ends of the eyelet limbs being spaced from the layers 17 and 18 to form therewith annular grooves 19 and 20. Waterways and oil feed passages are indicated at 12 and 13 respectively. The ring 14 and the layer 10 may be of steel. The layers 17 and 18 may be of asbestos with an admixture of nitrile or other synthetic rubber and the complete gaskets may be coated with a varnish which may be of modified epoxy resin having an aluminium dust filling. In modifications, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the corrugation 15 is formed in the layer 10.
