In a magnetically-held relay the electromagnetic structure and permanent magnet holding structure are mounted side-by-side in a plane spaced from and generally parallel to the base and the contact assembly is mounted between the plane and the base. The electromagnetic structure comprising a two-coil core 37, flat end pieces 42 secured to the opposite ends of the core, polepieces 51, 52 each secured to one of the end pieces, and a balanced armature 4 co-operating with faces 55, 56 of the polepieces 51, 52, is mounted on a bracket 5 secured to base 1. The permanent magnet structure, comprising permanent magnets 47, 48 separated by a magnetic member 49, is secured to end pieces 42. The armature is pivoted in bearings 68, 70 provided in bracket 5 and a bracket 71 secured to the permanent magnet structure. Wires 75, 76 depending from the armatures actuate changeover contact spring sets 32, 33, 35 and 30, 31, 34 on the base 1. The armature is moved to its alternative positions by oppositely acting windings 38, 39 and is retained in each position by one of the permanent magnets.
