Abstract

A polymer of butadiene of molecular weight of not less than 100,000 is depolymerized by reacting it in solution in a non-aqueous solvent with a free-radical initiator in the presence of oxygen or a molecular oxygen containing gas at 60 to 180 DEG C. The polymer may be a homopolymer of butadiene or a copolymer thereof with isoprene, styrene, vinyl toluene or divinyl benzene. The initiator may be oxygen, a molecular oxygen containing gas, a peroxide, hydroperoxide, persulphate, or azobisisobutyronitrile. A reaction promoter e.g. cobalt naphthenate, cobalt ethyl hexanoate or manganese ethyl hexanoate may also be present.
