Abstract

Carbon black is produced in the furnace process by introducing a liquid hydrocarbon feedstock axially into a cylindrical combustion zone and establishing about the periphery of the feedstock a burning mixture of hydrocarbon fuel and free oxygen containing combustion gas at a pressure exceeding 20 p.s.i.g. produced by a compressor driven by a gas turbine. The feedstock is pyrolytically dissociated to a carbon black aerosol which is then quenched and carbon black recovered. The cooled effluent from the combustion zone may be used to drive the gas turbine; alternatively the flue gas from the turbine may be used as the combustion supporting gas. The combustion gas, e.g. air, may be preheated by passing through an annulus surrounding the combustion zone in a countercurrent direction to the reaction products. The temperature of the combustion zone may exceed 2000 DEG C. The compressor may be on a common shaft with the turbine. The major portion of the compressed air may be passed to a combustion zone where hydrocarbon fuel is burnt and the hot gases used to drive the turbine. The minor portion is passed directly to the carbon black reactor. The feedstock may be hydrocarbon oil distillate fractions, thermal tar residue, shale oil or, coal tar.
