Abstract
A vinyl monomer, e.g. styrene, is polymerized in aqueous suspension containing bentonite and gelatin (in a weight ratio of 0.3-0.7:1) as the suspension stabilizer and which is maintained at a pH of 4.5-5.5 by means of a buffering agent, the amount of vinyl monomer in the suspension being not more than a volume ratio (with respect to water) of 45:55. The polymer, which is in bead form, may be expandable, e.g. a volatile liquid expanding agent such as pentane may be supplied to the polymerization reaction when the degree of conversion of styrene to polymer is at least 60%. The buffering agent may be sodium acetate/acetic acid, sodium hydroxide/acetic acid or sodium acetate/hydrochloric acid. A polymerization catalyst, e.g. a mixture of benzoyl peroxide and tert. butyl perbenzoate, may be used.
