Abstract
A coating solution for protecting areas of low current density of a workpiece during electroplating comprises an inert organic solvent, e.g. an aromatic hydrocarbon solvent or chlorinated hydrocarbon solvent having a boiling point of 45-150 DEG C.; a chlorinated naphthalene wax having a melting point of at least 100 DEG C., e.g. having a melting point of 120-140 DEG C. and a chlorine content of 55-65 wt. per cent and a microcrystalline wax having a melting point of at least 75 DEG C., e.g. having a melting point of 75-90 DEG C. and a needle penetration of 7-25; the wax being present in a proportion of at least 5 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of organic solvent, e.g. 100 parts by weight organic solvent may contain 2-20 parts by weight chlorinated naphthalene wax and 3-20 parts by weight microcrystalline wax.ALSO:A process for protecting low current density areas of a cathode having areas of high current density whereon metal plating is required, comprises applying to said predetermined areas of low current density a solution comprising an inert organic solvent, chlorinated naphthalene wax having a melting point of at least 100 DEG C., and a microcrystalline (e.g. waxes having an average molecular weight of about 490-800) wax having a melting point of at least 75 DEG C., and evaporating said solvent, thereby forming on said areas of low current density a wax film having a thickness of about 2.5-50 microns. The metal subsequently deposited on the workpiece may be chromium.
