Abstract
1,056,000. Axle-bearing guides. MIDLAND-ROSS CORPORATION. Oct. 9, 1963 [Sept- 3, 1963], No. 39836/63. Heading B7L. A railway vehicle axle guide assembly comprises a hollow pedestal frame 10, Fig. 4, securable to the rail vehicle body frame (not shown), and having downwardly-extending hollow longitudinally spaced guide columns 13 for a housing 25 of the bearing 29, which housing is part of a saddle 26 supporting the pedestal through fore-and-aft spring pairs 110, the housing 25 being snubbed for vertical and transverse movement relative to the pedestal by friction wedges or shoes 37 under the urge of springs 43 and tiltable about a horizontal longitudinal axis of the pedestal to facilitate increased transverse play. Referring to Figs. 5 and 6, the pedestal has hollow portions extending fore-and-aft of the central housing receiving aperture and each portion has vertically extending wear surfaces 101 whilst the hollow inverted T-shaped saddle 26 has vertical surfaces 95, 96, Fig. 8, on flanges 87, 88 at the ends of the transverse housing walls 77, the surfaces 95, 96 of each flange being engageable with a wear surface 101 and forming a fulcrum edge 97 at the junction of the surfaces 95, 96. The axle bearing 29 is held in the housing 25 between a transversely crowned adaptor 30, having vertical recesses co-operating with retaining lugs 81 on the housing 25, and a block 85 secured to the bottom of the housing by a bolt 86. Referring to Figs. 8 and 9, when axle 3, its bearing 29 and the adaptor are moved transversely relative to the pedestal, e.g. to the left, the adaptor engages the lugs 81 of the housing 25 and thus the upper portion of the saddle 26 moves to the left until the right-hand flange surfaces 95 engage the righthand pedestal surfaces 101 at their lower portions. If there is any further transverse movement the saddle 26 fulcrums on the righthand edges 97, whereafter the contiguous surfaces 96 commence to engage the wear surfaces 101 at their upper portions so as to tilt the saddle as shown in Fig. 9. The assembly is self-centring under the action of the springs 110. Vertical separation of the saddle 26 from the pedestal from 10 is prevented by tie bolts 115 which are each under the bias of a lightweight spring 119. As shown, at the left-hand side of Fig. 4, the load springs 110 may comprise pairs of concentric springs 111, 112.
