Dampers.-The draught in furnaces is regulated by admitting air to the chimney in regulated quantities by a valve operated by devices which are moved by variations in the chimney draught. Fig. 1 shows a hit-and-miss air inlet valve consisting of two bell-like parts 9, 10. The part 9 is operated by a lever 6 and a bell 2 which is moved by the variations in the pressure in a chamber 11 attached to the chimney 13. The bell 2 is mounted on a cylindrical piece 3, and may be connected to it by a rubber or like flexible sleeve. In a modification, the slots 9<a>, 10<a> are vertical, and the bell 9 is rotated about its vertical axis by a lever operated by an arm on a counterweighted lever like the lever 6. The bells 9, 10 may be mounted horizontally, and may then be replaced by similar half-cylinders. In another modification, a quarter-cylinder 17, Fig. 6, is moved over a similar part bv a shutter 22 moved by the chimney draught; the parts are pivoted on the ends of set-screws 22<a>, and have counterbalances 16<b>, 16<c>. In another modification, Fig. 8, the outer half-drum 17 is moved, by variations in the chimney draught on its part 17<c>, so as to admit air through a fixed half-drum 18. Valves other than hit-and-miss valves may be used.
