Abstract

<PICT:1055634/C4-C5/1> Apparatus for carbonizing particulate material such as sawdust comprises a number of tubes 23 and 231 arranged in a furnace and supplied with the material to be carbonized from a common hopper 61, each tube 23 or 231 having a screw conveyer which discharges carbonized material into a chamber 25 and gases evolved are led partly through hopper 61 and a stack 54 and partly through chamber 25, the latter gases being burned in the furnace. A conveyer 41 discharges carbonized material from the chamber 25.
