Abstract

1,054,853. Lasers. CSF.-COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FILS. April 13, 1964 [April 19, 1963], No. 15276/64. Heading H1C. In a laser a device for changing the polarization of the light emitted during predetermined time intervals and a birefringent prism are disposed in the optical cavity between one end of the active medium and a mirror of the cavity so that during the predetermined interval the stimulated emission is refracted away from the mirror. When a voltage pulse is applied to Kerr cell 4, Fig. 1, during a first time period T 1 the stimulated emission from element 1 is fed back by mirror 7 and oscillations take place. During the period between pulses applied to the Kerr cell 4 the plane of polarization is changed and due to birefringent prism 6 the light is refracted away from mirror 7 and oscillations cease. In the arrangement of Fig. 3 (as shown) the crystal active medium is cut so that the polarizer 3 is omitted.
