Abstract
1,054,793. Silencing gaseous currents; cooling lubricating oil; heating fuel. H. V. GIANNOTTI. July 9, 1963 [July 20, 1962], No. 27209/63. Heading F1B. An inlet or exhaust silencer is combined with a heat exchanger, the silencer casing 23 having inlets or outlets 24, 27, at opposite sides. The inlet heat exchanger shown comprises finned tubes forming a rectangle in the rectangular opening 24, 27, the tubes being supported on bars 40, Fig. 4, mounted on bolts 34a, by clamps 41 and cushioned by resilient inserts 42. The front plate 26 and side plates 47, Fig. 4, are lined with sound absorbing material 45, 46, which may be protected by a plastic cover 45a or perforated plate 23b. A resonant chamber 35 connected to the gas flow through perforations 28b may be formed adjacent the opening 27 and sound absorbing pads 44 may be supported in the heat exchanger assembly. The heat exchanger tubes 49a. 49b, Fig. 7 (not shown) may be used to cool the lubricating oil of an engine, the hot oil flowing through a fuel heater 52 to exchanger inlet pipe 50 and the cooled oil returning through pipe 51 to a temperature control valve 55 which maintains the temperature of the oil returned to the engine at a predetermined value by mixing some of the hot oil from pipe 57 with the cooled oil.
