Abstract

[Also in Division C3] An adhesive composition for use in attaching outsoles to shoe uppers comprises a solution in a volatilizable organic solvent of 30-60% of a linear thermoplastic polyurethane having a m.p. of 60‹C.-200‹C. obtained from the reaction of material having two reactive hydrogen atoms with an -NCO terminated urethane polymer in a molar ratio to give an -NCO to active hydrogen group ratio of 0.8 :1 to 3:1, said -NCO terminated urethane polymer having been obtained from the reaction of an aromatic diisocyanate with a diol in an NCO : OH ratio of 1.2 :1 to 4:1, the diol being selected from (a) polyalkylene ether glycols of MW 300-3,000 of formula:- where R, R 1 and R 2 are alkylene radicals of 2-4C and (b) polyester glycols of MW 1,000-4,4000 of formula where R and R 1 represent hydrocarbon radicals of 1-9C and R 2 represents a hydrocarbon radical of 2-10C. An outsole may be attached to a shoe upper by (a) applying to one of the surfaces an adhesive composition as described above, (b) allowing the solvent in said adhesive composition to volatilize to deposit an adherent, non tacky, film 0.005-0.05 inch in thickness, (c) directing infra red heat at said film to soften to a fluid condition, (d) heating the other attaching surface, (e) positioning the outsole and upper on each other and pressing them together and allowing to cool.
