Abstract

1,054,375. Power assisted steering. HYDROSTEER Ltd. June 26, 1964 [July 9, 1963], No. 27174/63. Heading B7H. A power assisted rack-and-pinion steering mechanism comprises a rack 4 engaged by a pinion 1 extending from a housing 2 in which is located the control valve which regulates, according to the direction of steer, the supply of pressure fluid through the conduits 5 and 7 to the housing 6 of the rack-and-pinion which is also the working cylinder of the unit, the piston 9 being integral with the rack. Bolts 17 connect the piston 9 to the steering links 18 and operate in a slot 16. The cylinder 6 has a portion 12 of larger diameter ending in a shoulder 13, in which is slidable a cylindrical sleeve 11 having a sealing ring 20 and which forms the working cylinder for the end portion 10, of reduced diameter, of the piston 9, the arrangement being such that when the conduit 7 is pressurized, the piston 9 and the cylinder 11 slide to the left and when the conduit 5 is pressurized the piston 9 slides to the right and the cylinder 11 slides up against the shoulder 13 covering part of the slot 16 thus enabling the piston to work over this part of the slot. A sealing ring 19 is provided at the right-hand part of the piston and a stud 24 may be provided in the rack to facilitate centring the cylinder 11. The movable part 11 of the cylinder may alternatively be disposed at the other end to the rack.
