Abstract
105,400. Senior, G. April 12, 1916. Projectiles; projectile fuses.-Consists in making grenades and bombs with knife-edges and of such shapes as to cause them to alter their line of flight when thrown in a particular manner, a part of the bomb being in the form of a handle. As shown in Fig. 1, the grenade is made like a boomerang having the cross-section shown in Fig. 2, the edges being sharp. The charge is fired by a detonator t and time-fuse c, which can be ignited for different times at different points d, e, f by an electric igniter g connected by leads h, l to buttons m, n adapted to contact with rings on the fingers of the thrower; these rings are connected to a battery carried by the thrower, a switch being provided to close the circuit just before the grenade is thrown. The battery may be carried by the grenade and the detonator fired by impact, a safety tape or pin being removed before the grenade is thrown. The two arms of the boomerang may be pivoted to each other at one end or in the middle; or the boomerang may be made in the form of a complete crescent. The lower part of the boomerang is cast with grooves, and the upper part stamped.
