In a motor driven compressor, Fig. 4 (not shown) comprising a compression chamber and a suction chamber 22, a valve 26 is operable during a fixed portion only of each compression cycle to allow fluid in the compression chamber to escape to the suction chamber, when the pressure in the compression chamber exceeds a value a fixed amount above the pressure in the suction chamber. The valve 26 is located at the outlet of an aperture 28 in the wall of the cylinder 17 in which a piston 16 is reciprocated by an electric motor 12, and is responsive to the difference in pressure between the suction and compression chambers. The aperture 28 communicates with an intake silencing chamber 21 in which a leaf-spring 24 for closing the valve 26 is located, the chamber 21 being in communication with the suction chamber 22 through a tube 23. A second similar valve may be provided in the wall of the cylinder 17 and axially spaced from the valve 26.
