The inclination of the headlamps of a motor vehicle is controlled by a rod 7 slidable and axially latchable in at least two positions in a sleeve 8 having an external screw-thread engaged in a tapped bush 12 mounted on the vehicle, sliding of the rod 7 in the sleeve 8 moving the headlamp from a retracted position within the vehicle bodywork to an operative position, or vice versa, and rotation of the rod producing minor adjustment of the inclination by movement of the sleeve 8 within the bush 12. The rod is operated by the driver by means of a handle 14 and terminates in a ball-and-socket joint pivotally connected to a lever keyed to a shaft transverse to the vehicle, to which the lamps are secured. The rod may have a plurality of notches 9 for engagement with a spring- pressed ball 10 in the sleeve providing a series of latching positions, the pitch of the thread on the sleeve being equal to the interval between two consecutive positions. In this case, the bush 12 may have a groove 17 in which is a locking plunger 16 acting on the spring 11 which presses on the ball 10 so that rotation of the rod moves the plunger 16 out of the groove 17 and prevents the sliding movement of the rod.
