Abstract
1,053,385. Seals. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY June 4, 1964 [June 14, 1963], No. 23785/63. Heading F2B. Sealing means for a movable shaft, e.g. a nuclear reactor control rod 1, where it extends through a housing 2 comprises a pellicular sleeve 11, 18 which is supported in the housing and urged into sealing contact with the shaft by fluid pressure supplied through a passage in the housing. The sleeves 11 and 18 are secured to housing members 4 and 12 by plugs 9, 10 and 16, 17 respectively and may be of nylon or P.T.F.E. and have a maximum wall thickness of 0À020 inch. A purge gas fed through passages 22-26 to the space 27 between the sleeves flows in both axial directions along the axially movable rod 1 to prevent ingress of ambient air and escape of pressure gas in the reactor and the flow of purge gas is restricted by the sleeves which are urged into contact with rod by pressurized sealing gas supplied through passages 27-33. The purge and sealing gas may be argon.
