Abstract

1,053,130. Knitting-machines, R A T B Y ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Nov. 11, 1965 [Nov. 12, 1964], No. 46069/64. Heading D1C. A flat bed machine is provided with positive yarn feeding mechanism mounted at one end of the machine comprising two pairs of rollers 20, 21, Figs. 1 and 3 (not shown), one pair feeding the yarn to the carrier at one speed when the yarn carrier and cam carriage are moving away from that end of the machine containing the mechanism and the other pair - feeding the yarn at a reduced speed when the carrier and carriage are moving towards the mechanism. For this purpose, the two pairs of rollers are alternately operable depending on the direction of movement of the carriage. In a parallel machine pairs of rollers may be provided for feeding yarn associated with each bed and the rollers for feeding the yarns in each direction of movement of the carriage may be mounted on the same shafts or alternatively independently of each other. The upper rollers 20 are positively driven through gearing 25..31, Fig. 5 (not shown), from a sprocket 32, Fig. 4, not shown, driven alternately in opposite directions by a chain 24 reciprocated by the cam carriage. Mounted above the machine is a rail 15 supporting switches MS.1.... MS.4 operated by rocking plates 65<SP>1</SP>..65<SP>4</SP> which are themselves actuated by a cam plate 66 when the carriage is traversed, Figs. 11, 12 not shown. The arrangement is such that the switches energise solenoids biasing levers supporting the lower rollers 21 in an upwardly direction. These levers are further controlled by plates which restrict their movement depending on the direction of movement of the carriage. The arrangement is such that the appropriate roller is permitted to press the yarn against the driven roller depending on the direction of travel of the carriage. The upper roller may be stepped or a number of rollers of differing diameter may be provided and the lower roller may be shogged on to the appropirate stepped portion or different diameter roller to enable the yarn to be fed at various speeds.
