Abstract

1,053,149. Welding by pressure. G. A. BLACK. Aug. 2, 1965 [Aug. 4, 1964], No. 31713/64. Heading B3R. In a method of friction welding a first stationary component such as a plate 1, to a second stationary component, such as a tube 2, a further component in the form of a ring 3 is rotated in frictional engagement with surfaces of the tube and the plate until the components reach a suitable welding temperature, whereupon the rotation of the ring is stopped and it is pressed against the said surfaces to weld all the components together. The ring may be provided with notches 4 for engagement with a driving member 5. The driving member 5 may have an internal mandrel 6, Fig. 4 (not shown), to limit or prevent weld flash forming on the inside of the tube, and may also have a shroud 7, Fig. 5 (not shown), to similarly control the external formation of weld flash. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,011,129.
