Abstract
1,053,148. Welding by pressure. G. A. BLACK. Aug. 2, 1965 [Aug. 4, 1964], No. 31712/64. Heading B3R. In a method of friction welding two workpieces together formers are placed around the joint to prevent or control the formation of welding flash. In embodiments described a former 3, Fig. 1 (not shown), is placed round a stud 1 being welded to a plate 2, the former having a flared end 5 to form a fillet at the join; a cylindrical former 9, Fig. 2 (not shown), is placed inside tubes to be joined to prevent formation of internal flash; a split former 13, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), is placed around a join between rods or tubes, the former being shaped if required at the join to allow a ridge or a flange to form. The cylindrical former 9 may be constructed, for ease of removal from the tubes, of separate segments 22, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), arranged around a spigot 21.
